Four Continents (1935)

Leo Lentelli (Italian. 1879 - 1961)

Four Continents

Leo Lentelli’s allegorical carvings of Asia, Europe, Africa and The Americas not only reflect the range of international businesses within the building, but also communicate the vastness and history of the continents. Asia’s serene Buddha symbolizes piety, while its elephant represents strength. Europe’s Neptune and accompanying dolphins are bold, stylized and symbolic of exploration and trade. Africa shows a dignified figure in native dress, with an authoritative scepter. The Americas is represented by a mammoth buffalo head and corn (North America), with a Mayan head and geometric designs (Central and South America).
