Sentinels (1990)

Robert Kushner (American. 1949 –)

Sentinels

In 1990, Rockefeller Center undertook an extensive renovation of the lobby of 1270 Avenue of the Americas. The Art Advisory Service of the MoMA helped find the right artist to distinguish the space—Robert Kushner, whose three winged spirits were created as silent, heavenly guardians of the building, placed high on the walls near the ceiling and above the entrance. His hand-carved “negative cutout” method, cast by pouring molten bronze on his patterned molds, give the figures an ethereal feel in a golden dreamland.
