Eve (1932)

Gwen Creighton Lux (American. 1908 - 2001)

Defying easy categorization, this unconventional portrait of Eve is depicted from an evolutionary view. Rather than the more traditional Garden of Eden maiden, this figure is somewhere between an apelike being and a human being, the evolutionary transformation reflected in the model’s roughness and disproportions. Rather than holding the symbolic apple of original sin, here she holds the seed of life, symbolic of the future. With its heroic size and misshapen form, it is a memorable work that commands our attention.
