Christie's annual 20th Century Week is always a sensation in NYC, and this year the excitement ripples across the globe, with three auctions taking place both in person and online. Running October 6–8, the event begins with the 20th Century Evening Sale Tuesday night, followed by the Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale on October 7, and the Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale October 8.
Some of the heavy hitters featured on opening night include Cy Twombly, Jackson Pollock, Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Tamara De Lempicka and Pablo Picasso. Also headlining the sale is STAN the Tyranosaurus rex, who has been on display in the Christie's window since September 15.
Pieces by Ruth Asawa, Agnes Martin and Matthew Wong go on the auction block the second day, and Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy and Henri Matisse are a few of the big names closing out the week. In addition, an online sale of prints by Robert Motherwell is running until October 8.
Fans who want to catch the action from home can live-stream a pre-sale discussion at 6:30pm on October 6, followed by the Evening Sale live at 7pm. You can also take a virtual tour of the galleries, and see the artwork in augmented reality.
Go to the Christie's website to explore all the options, including learning how to place bids online.
