Your Summer Bucket List: Top 6 Things to Do in New York City Before Summer Ends

Labor Day belongs to New York City in a way no other place can claim: the holiday started here, and the city still treats the first Monday in September like unfinished business. New York on Labor Day weekend in 2026 stacks a Caribbean carnival, the final week of the US Open, and one of the last weekends of beach season into a single long weekend. This lineup covers the best ways to plan end-of-summer celebrations. And even if you have your own traditions, read on: a few details that used to be reliable, including the route of the Fifth Avenue Labor Day Parade, are different this year.

1. Celebrate the West Indian American Day Carnival

The West Indian American Day Carnival, known to most New Yorkers simply as the West Indian Day Parade, takes over Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway every Labor Day, and 2026 is no exception. Carnival week runs from September 3 through the holiday itself, with the parade landing on Monday, September 7. Costumed bands, steel pan and soca music, and vendors selling roti and jerk chicken fill the parkway for one of the city's largest annual gatherings. It's the kind of event that turns a national holiday into a destination on its own.

2. Spend a Day at the US Open

The 2026 US Open runs from August 23 through September 13, with Fan Week and qualifying running from August 23-29, leading into the main draw on Sunday, August 30. That calendar puts Labor Day weekend squarely inside the tournament, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens. If you’re not a fan of parades, but still want a day that's distinctly New York, a session at the Open delivers top-level tennis surrounded by a relaxed late-summer crowd.

3. Feel the City from Above at Top of the Rock

This time of year, Rockefeller Center's Top of the Rock is just right at midday. Late summer sun sits high enough by early afternoon to warm the open-air terraces, and the deck's 360-degree view offers an elevated perspective on the holiday weekend bustle. Before or after, grab a drink: The Weather Room, 67 floors up inside Top of the Rock, pours cocktails alongside a menu sourced from purveyors across the five boroughs, or head down to Pebble Bar, a warm-weather gathering space on The Rink with snacks and cocktails.

4. Have a Central Park Picnic

Sheep Meadow is a reliable anchor for a slower afternoon in Central Park, especially if you’re based on the Upper West Side. Blankets, a cooler, and something to read promise a peaceful afternoon in this oasis; amplified music, bikes, and dogs aren't allowed. It's the picnic New York City does best, mostly because the whole city seems to be doing it at once. The lawn opens daily at 11 a.m., weather permitting.

5. Turn Lunch into a Street Food Crawl

Smorgasburg gives Labor Day weekend three separate chances at a street food afternoon. The market runs Thursday through Saturday in Central Park near Columbus Circle, Saturdays in Williamsburg, and Sundays in Prospect Park, with more than 70 vendors rotating through each location. Between the three, there's a version within reach of almost anywhere in the city over the long weekend.

6. Catch a Mets Baseball Game at Citi Field

Baseball fills out the sports side of the weekend alongside the US Open. The Mets host the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field for a three-game series running September 4 through 6, wrapping up with a Sunday getaway-day game. It's a tried-and-true way to spend a few hours of the long weekend outdoors.

7. Take One Final Summer Beach Day

Rockaway Beach and Coney Island close out summer in very different registers, so pick based on the mood you're after. Rockaway pulls in surfers before sunrise and fills its boardwalk with taco stands and coffee carts by midmorning. It’s perfect for a beach day built around a wetsuit and a long walk, rather than a towel and a book. Coney Island trades the surf for the Wonder Wheel turning overhead, the Cyclone's rattle, and a Nathan's hot dog eaten standing up on the boardwalk. Both stay open through New York City's public beach season, with lifeguards on duty through September 13, the last weekend before the ocean quietly goes off duty until next summer.

8. Visit the Richmond County Fair

For a long-weekend option away from Manhattan, the 46th annual Richmond County Fair runs September 5 through 7 at Historic Richmond Town on Staten Island. The fair pairs the rides and food of a traditional county fair with the historic village's 17th- through 19th-century buildings, and it doubles as Historic Richmond Town's largest annual fundraiser. It's a different pace than the rest of the weekend, and worth the trip for anyone who wants Labor Day to feel a little more quaint.

9. Connect the Weekend to New York's Labor History

Labor Day is a national holiday now, but it started as a New York City idea. The first Labor Day was marked on September 5, 1882, when roughly 10,000 workers marched from City Hall to Union Square, and Congress made the first Monday in September a federal holiday in 1894. That history is still visible in 2026: the New York City Central Labor Council holds its Labor Day March honoring the city's working people on Tuesday, September 8, assembling on Liberty Street between Church Street and Broadway in Lower Manhattan.

What changed in 2026: In past years, the Central Labor Council's parade marched up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 64th Street; the 2025 parade was led by co-grand marshals Rich Maroko and Terri Carmichael Jackson. For 2026, the labor movement's event has shifted to a rally and march starting on Liberty Street the evening after Labor Day, rather than a Fifth Avenue parade on the holiday itself. Anyone expecting the old route should plan for Tuesday evening in Lower Manhattan instead.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Labor Day 2026 falls on Monday, September 7.
  • The West Indian American Day Carnival runs along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn on Labor Day itself.
  • The NYC Central Labor Council's rally and march happens the following evening, Tuesday, September 8, in Lower Manhattan, not on a Fifth Avenue route.
  • Public beaches close for the season on September 13.
  • Sheep Meadow opens at 11 a.m. and doesn't allow dogs, bikes, or amplified music.
  • Smorgasburg runs Thursday through Saturday in Central Park, Saturdays in Williamsburg, and Sundays in Prospect Park.
