What to Do in New York City in March 2024
It started as an Instagram, a way for tattoo artist Mira Mariah to share her craft with a wider audience. Today, @girlknewyork boasts a following of over 200,000; partners with brands like Bombas, Nike, and Nordstrom; and now has a brick-and-mortar store at Rockefeller Center. The shop, located at 10 W 51st Street, offers drawing classes, events, and merchandise, and it’s currently showing All Art Was Once Modern, an exhibition on display through March 31.
This March, in honor of Women’s History Month, Mariah created a map of women-owned businesses around Rockefeller Center. With the same flair she brings to her tattoos – reminiscent of line art with a feminine bent – the entrepreneur and artist captured the storefronts of these nearby businesses.
Immediately striking is the diversity on display, from restaurants and cafes to jewelry stores, a florist, and a bookshop. “There’s a discovery aspect,” she explains of her artistic process, “that is going around and looking at things and taking photos. I feel like a spy.” Mariah also engaged with the online presence of each business included in the map, hoping to tap into their ethos and culture. “I wanted to illustrate the storefront of each business featuring their star products and acknowledging their individuality.”
This isn’t just a map, though. When you make a purchase at one of the 13 participating businesses listed on the map (and below), you’ll receive one redemption sticker. Once you have 6 stickers, you can bring the map with you to Jupiter to enjoy one complimentary cocktail and one small bite.*
The result is a wholly unique depiction of Rockefeller Center. A Nap Dress® dangles from the window of Hill House Home, candles burn at Apotheke, and plates of fresh food adorn Jupiter and NARO. Almost like a microcosm of the city itself, the map reminds us of the variety at our fingertips. “I love seeing women follow their passions, and the diversity of their businesses was so fun to draw,” says Mariah. “For me, I loved seeing their art and getting to recreate it in my own [way].”
As for the future entrepreneurs out there, Mariah has some simple advice: “Gather in teams of talented women, build and brainstorm, and build each other up!”
